August 2025
During August, we've focused on Reading Literature , Reading Informational Text & Language with the following standards focus:
6.RL.1 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
6.RL.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone.
6.RL.10 By the end of the year, proficiently and independently read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, in a text complexity range determined by qualitative and quantitative measures appropriate to grade 6.
6.RI.1 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
6.L.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. a. Use punctuation (commas, parentheses, dashes) to set off nonrestrictive/parenthetical elements. b. Use correct spelling.
The kids are also doing a CommonLit reading assignment each week that also includes multiple choice and a constructed response question that meet our 6th grade ELA standards. That CommonLit score is included in their Independent Lit Station Work coursework grade for each week.
They also have 7th Grade Wordly Wise instruction happening. We go over the word list together at the start of each new unit. Then the students must pick two other part of the assignment to do with section E with a short story and the new vocabulary used in context as a "have to" assigned by me. I do score those and leave the kids feedback in their workbook. Tests on WW will happen every other week as the kids have shown they need more time to learn the vocabulary and be ready to test. Greek and Latin Roots are now 2 per week. Students have those in their folders each week
Kids have a weekly checklist for independent work and are learning to use that to plan and pace out the work they must do. If the kids need to bring work home for homework, they are permitted to do so. My only worry is if they forget to bring their folders back, they may be further behind. With 90 minutes each day, they really do have enough time to do the work in class. (Sample copy below)
No Red Ink lesson will also take 2 weeks to complete now as our diagnostic assessment shows that the kids need some support and dircted instruction in grammar and punctuation. So more time is being allowed so we can focus on those language standards.
We are continuing our work with our Hatchet novel study using Depth and Complexity questioning to write about each chapter read. (Those Hatchet novel study depth and complexity pages are shared below for your reference.)
We also learned about all of the dimensions of Depth and Complexity with a deep dive on Details and Changes over Time with a study of sunflowers.
6th also got access to 6th Grade ELA standards-based escape room type challenges and Lock of the Day puzzles in our 6th Grade SAGE classroom on Breakoutedu.org
