iPad: Class Management

Getting Started Basic Operation Adding Apps Guided Access Broken, Lost or Stolen Class Management

Ways to incorporate iPads

            • Collaborative groups can share one iPad
            • Station Rotation
              • 1 iPad at a station
              • Multiple iPads at a station for each student

Things to Consider...

Duncanville AUP video (pause and discuss with students)

Tips for the Teacher derived from: http://www.georgetownisd.org/Page/8662

Storage

Charging:

    • How and when will the devices be charged?
    • Can this be a student's "Job"?

Placement while not in use:

    • Where should the iPad be placed on the desk if not in use?
    • At what point should it be put in cabinet if not being used?

iPad Identification:

    • If something inappropriate occurs with an iPad, this will help tracking who is responsible.
    • Keep a list of which students use the iPad. Use spiral notebook and have students "check-out" the iPad. Or assign an iPad to students to always use.

Procedures

Routines:

    • How do students get iPads?
    • How do student return iPads?
    • Will you check them out?
    • Will you inspect iPads before being put into cabinet?

Send/receive information:

    • How will students send information to you?
    • How will you send information to students?

Time limits / Guided Access:

    • Will students have time limits?
    • Are there times when you want students to only be in one app?

Early Finishers:

    • What will early finishers do?
    • Can they use another app at their discretion? Or will you assign a second app they can use?

Rules and Expectations

Digital Citizenship

    • How will you introduce and continue to discuss Digital Citizenship?

Discuss Dville AUP

    • This should be the first lesson you go over prior to students using the devices. Here is a link to a PowToon video that you can use to pause and discuss each point of Duncanville's Student AUP. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT-EUDGrVqI&t=3s

Placement while using

    • iPad should be on the desk/table in flat or slightly elevated position when being used.
    • Do not let students place the iPad in their lap. This allows them to "hide" what they are doing and may also cause it to get dropped.

Handling / Sharing

    • Always carry with two hands.
    • No "tug of war" with the iPad.
    • Only one student "pilots" the iPad at a time.
    • When sharing, place between two people or in the center of the group. Assign jobs when sharing. For example, one student may input text and another student take pictures or video as needed.

Headphones/Volume

    • Teach students how to mute the iPad unless sound is needed.
    • Keep iPad muted at all times or keep earbuds plugged in at all times.
    • Tell students how many sound bars are appropriate for use with earbuds and for listening "out loud".
    • Obtain earbuds for each student or ask students to bring their own. DO NOT SHARE earbuds.
    • An audio splitter can be obtained when sharing.

Care and Upkeep

    • Hands should be clean when using the iPad.
    • Do not set the iPad near liquids, food objects of extreme heat.
    • Never spray liquid on the iPad or its case.
    • Use a soft cloth to clean the screen on a regular basis.

Get student’s attention

    • Set a specific way you will get students attention while they are using the iPad. An example might be that you say "Face Down" and students are to place the iPad face down and eyes on you. Or come up with a cute "catchy" phrase.

Showing on-task behavior

    • What does on-task behavior look like? Show students examples of your expectations for this.
