- confederation - a loosely united group of governments working together
- treaty - an agreement between countries or groups of people
- port -a trading center where ships are loaded and unloaded
- generation - the average time between the birth of parents and the birth of their children
- representation - acting or speaking on behalf of someone or something else
- independence - freedom to govern oneself or freedom from control by others
- revolution - a large sudden change in government or in people’s lives
- declaration - an official statement
- fact - a statement that can be checked and proved to be true
- opinion -a statement that tells what the person who makes it thinks or believes. It cannot be proved
- waterway - a body of water that boats can use
- navigable - deep and wide enough for ships to use
- rapid -a rocky place in a river where a sudden drop in elevation causes fast-moving or dangerous water
- canal- a waterway dug across the land
- lock -a part of a canal in which the water level can be raised or lowered to bring ships to the level of the next part of the canal
- competition -in business, the contest among companies to get the most customers or sell the most products
- turnpike - a road that drivers must pay to use
