The moon rises (appears visible over the horizon) in the East and sets (disappears below the horizon) in the West.
Moonrise and Moonset
The rising and setting times change each day because the Earth and Moon do NOT rotate at the same speed.
This means the moon will rise and set at different times at different stages in its orbit around the Earth.
What does the moon do for us on Earth?
Provides light at night
The sunlight that reflects off the moon and enters our atmosphere provides us with light while our portion of the Earth is rotated away from the Sun’s light.
