Volume of an object does NOT need to be the sum of its parts.
Let's take a look!
This ice cube has the volume of 35mL.
The volume of the ice turned into chips is 50mL.
But when we melt all the ice chips, the water has a volume of 30mL.
Examples In Nature
Let’s look back at the sedimentary rock we formed from all the grains of sand.
The rock has a smaller volume than the total volumes of the individual grains of sand because many of the surfaces have been fused together and the grains have been squished!
Remember-the mass of the sand and the fused rock are equal!
Things To Know!
Mass is how much matter (tiny parts) is in an object.
No matter how you break apart (and reassemble) an object it will still have the same mass.
The mass of an object is the same as the added up masses of its parts.
