Acorns, Large Rocks, Pencil, Paper, Scale (optional)
Step 1
Gather acorns. If you can't find any acorns, small soft rocks will work.
Use you palm to get a feel of how heavy (similar to mass) the acorn. Trace the acorn on a piece of paper to record how much space it occupies (its volume).
Smash the acorns (or small rocks) with a large rock or other heavy object.
Place the pieces on your paper, and trace their outline.
Step 3
Compare how the jagged shaped pieces result in a different volume than that of the original.
What do you notice?
Step 4
Put the pieces in your palm. Does the weight feel similar to the when the acorn was whole?
If you used a scale, do the pieces show the same number when put on again?
If you could collect all the pieces and take the mass, it would have the same mass as the original item because the matter has separated but not been lost!
