The Viola is recognized by its rich and impactful sound. While often playing the harmony, the viola often appears in folk, jazz, rock and pop music, with bands such as The Cure, The WHO, Van Morrison and The Beatles.
To play, the viola is held by resting it on the left shoulder and holding it in place with the side of the cheek. For younger players, a foam pad called a shoulder rest is employed to help support the instrument and prevent strain on the player.
