With the right support, children can learn to change gears without whining and tantrums.

  • Create routines and consistency for children

  • Preview the day and give countdowns to reinforce consistency and allow them to “get ready” for the next event

  • Use songs to help make things for calm and fun

  • Use visuals, such as charts and graphs for kids who respond best to seeing things

  • Make sure you have their attention before giving information

  • Use rewards or a point system

  • Use appropriate consequences - if they are at least making an effort, let it go

  • Use praise when they do well and are successful in the transitioning
