In Dublin City Schools, we believe that all students deserve a mathematical learning experience centered around communication, collaboration, thinking and problem solving.
Reading workshop is an instruction model that focuses on the strengths and needs of each individual reader. Reading behaviors are modeled and direct instruction is provided on reading strategically. Students are given time to read, an opportunity to choose their reading selections, and time to talk about books and strategies.
Writing workshop is an instruction model that focuses on the strengths and needs of each individual writer. Teachers provide direct instruction on the writing process, craft, genre and mechanics. Students are given time and choice of what to write, and opportunities to share with audiences.
Word Study (spelling and vocabulary) is an integral part of the Dublin Literacy Workshop Model and implied across the Language Arts Standards. All students will learn to spell within the context of meaningful reading and writing experiences.
Students in Grade 5 will focus on exploring the components of various systems and then investigate dynamic and sustainable relationships within systems using scientific inquiry. Students will learn about the cycles and patterns in the solar system and light, sound and motion and interactions within ecosystems.
In grade five, students study the Western Hemisphere (North and South America), its geographic features, early history, cultural development and economic change.
