What time is practice?
At the start of the season, practices are indoors and 2-3 days a week until around 4:15pm. Once it warms up and we can be fully outside, practices are 5 days a week from 3:15-4:30, and girls/boys stay every other day until 5:00 pm to work on field events and relays.
What does a typical practice look like?
Athletes will begin each practice with warm-up running and dynamic stretching. We will usually have a brief announcement period to review upcoming meets or practice-related information. Athletes will then move into the main workout, which will focus on either long-distance running or sprint training. Practice will conclude with a team stretch.
Around 4:30 p.m., either the girls’ or boys’ team will stay to work on field events until 5:00 p.m. We rotate which group participates each day to ensure athletes receive focused instruction and quality coaching.
Families must read the newsletter and follow the calendar for any updates to practice times. We also ask that athletes are picked up promptly at the scheduled end time for each practice or meet.
Are there tryouts and cuts?
NO
There are no try-outs for track & field. Every athlete that would like to participate has a spot on the team as long as they show up to practices/meets, work hard and truly want to be a part of our culture.
Invitational Meets: For invitational meets, coaches take a smaller group of athletes to these events. Usually, it is the top two performing athletes in each event.
Relay Events: Coaches select relay teams strategically based on individual athletes & what is best for the team.
What if I need to miss practice?
If an athlete needs to miss practice or a meet, the athlete needs to inform their head coach prior to missing the event.
OHSAA only requires 10 practices before they can compete in a meet at the start of the season.
Things come up, but we ask that if you choose to join the track & field team, you commit to attending practice each day.
Do I get to choose my events?
A google form will go out to all athletes before the first meet, and they get to choose their events.
We spend one practice trying out all the different field events so athletes have a chance to see what field event they might want to pursue!
Relay teams are selected by the coaching staff.
What if I am going to play a club sport at the same time as track?
We understand that many athletes participate in club sports during the spring season. However, if an athlete chooses to join the track team, we ask that track be made a priority, including regular attendance at practices and meets. Coaches will be as flexible as possible with athletes who may need to leave a little early or miss an occasional practice. That said, if practices are consistently missed, athletes may not be considered for invitational meets, regardless of times or performance.
Do I need to sign up for Final Forms even if I did a different sport at Karrer in the fall or winter?
The simple answer is yes. Please see the homepage to register on final forms.
Are spikes mandatory?
Spikes are not mandatory. Very few athletes have spikes, but we welcome athletes to them if they would like! Please no spikes to be worn inside the Karrer school building.
Spikes are for meets ONLY!
A really great pair of running shoes is all you really need!
Is it a good sport to join?
Joining the track team is a really great way to be involved at KMS! Athletes make new friends, challenge themselves, see their own personal growth and success throughout the season, and get to belong to a team!
Track is a fun, positive environment where coaches push athletes to be the best they can be! We are competitive, but we always work to meet athletes where they are at.
Running is a lifelong activity and a great hobby for students to get invovled with at this age!
We encourage anyone thinking of joining to be a part of our team!
