August/September
We are focusing on setting up math workshop and learning what math will look and sound like this year. We will also discuss how to collaborate and communicate with our peers. We will also tackle quality work and dive into the mathematical practices using our vertical whiteboard spaces. On Friday we will do counting collections with a lot of fun objects. Ask your student what they counted and how they counted it?
We are focused on setting up routines in the classroom and will not start science and social studies right away. I'm using this time to do activities with the class to build community and friendships with each other.
September
We have started Number Corner this week and this month we will focus on the routines of each Number Corner workout. The primary mathematical emphasis this month is multiplication: students review multiplication facts, work with multiples of 10, think about factors and multiples, and work on strategies for multiplication with larger numbers. All of this work in Number Corner is directly related to our first unit of multiplicative thinking in math workshop.
Family Letter- Unit 1
Family Letter- Fluency
In September we will start with social studies. Our first topic will center around primary and secondary sources as well as timelines. We will also look at a variety of maps and discuss cardinal and intermediate directions. These conversations will lead us into learning about various groups of people that have lived in Ohio over time.
October
We will continue to focus on our basic multiplication facts every week and continue talking about using the facts we know to help us with the ones that we don't. For examples to solve 6 x 7 we can use the facts 6 x 5 and 6 x 2.
Number Corner this month will focus on concepts including analyzing patterns, measurement and fractions, work with numbers in base ten, multi-digit multiplication, and multi-step story problems.
In math workshop students continue to build multiplicative reasoning as they work with multi-digit multiplication and early division. we will focus on multiplicative comparisons and multiplying large numbers using several different strategies including the area model, ratio table, and partial products.
In October we will finish up talking about cardinal/intermediate directions and map scale. Then we will move into science and discuss landforms, weathering, erosion, and deposition.
