Reading workshop includes mini-lessons, guided reading groups, individual reading conferences, independent reading and read aloud.

Second graders will read a great deal of nonfiction and a variety of literature including fables and folktales from many cultures.

There is a strong focus on skills and strategies that will lead to students’ fuller comprehension of the material they read.

Students use these strategies to better comprehend reading in all content areas.

Math workshop focuses on operations, number sense, geometry, measurement and data.

In Dublin City Schools, we believe that all students deserve a mathematical learning experience centered around communication, collaboration, thinking and problem solving.

8 Mathematical Practices:

Writing Workshop includes a mini-lesson, writing time, conferences and sharing.

—The students will be writing narrative, opinion, and informational pieces.

—Some of the writing they will compose this year will include: small moment stories, persuasive writing, research reports, and responses to literature.

Word Study includes high frequency words, spelling patterns, and vocabulary.

Word study cycles focused on spelling patterns usually last 1-2 weeks.

We do not have tests on weekly spelling lists. Students are assessed on the spelling patterns we have studied and individualized high frequency words.

Our second grade standards include Earth and Space, Life Science, Physical Science, and Scientific Processes.

Students will explore air and atmosphere, animals, weather, forces and motion, and fossils.

Various STEM projects are also offered throughout the year (STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
