Applications must be submitted through the Academic Portal: https://alunos.uminho.pt/EN/candidates/doctorsdegrees/Pages/default.aspx (registration required by following "Set up here your application registration").
After successful registration and login, follow: ELECTRONIC DESK (top menu)-> Applications (on the left) -> New Application -> PhD Degree -> PhD in Telecommunications MAP-tele (with course).
For the Recommendation Letter, please submit a dummy PDF file as they must be submitted by e-mail (see below).
In their application candidates need to provide the following mandatory documents (under penalty of having their application excluded):
Detailed Curriculum Vitae: outline your education, research experience, work experience, publications, scholarships awarded, prizes and honours received, society memberships, and any other extracurricular activities. Include information about your fluency in written and spoken English. It should include your full name, photograph, postal address, e-mail address, nationality, and country of residence.
Motivation Letter (in English): detailing, in a succinct but clear way, your academic and professional background as well as your motivation and objectives for pursuing PhD studies in Telecommunications. Your letter should be specific in describing your interests and motivations. When describing your research interests, you should explain why you think they are important areas of study and why you are particularly well-suited to pursuing them.
Three (3) Recommendation Letters: recommenders should know you relatively well and be able to evaluate the quality of your previous work. At least two of the letters should be from faculty or recent employers. Letters should be signed and sent directly by the recommenders to adriano.moreira@dsi.uminho.pt. Three recommendation letters are mandatory, a penalty applies in case less than three letters are provided. Paper recommendations will not be accepted. Qualification certificate with the accomplished curricular units and respective final grades: Habilitation Certificate indicating the degree possessed by the applicant, with the final classification. Candidates holding a foreign certificate should provide an official declaration provided by the Higher Education Institution where the academic degree was concluded, including the identification of the academic degree, the final classification as well as the evaluation range used.
English proficiency certificate.
IMPORTANT: For qualifications obtained abroad, the documents must be authenticated, under penalty of exclusion, by the official education services of the respective country and recognised by the Portuguese diplomatic or consular authority or bear the apostille of the Hague Convention. The same applies to translations of documents whose original language is not Spanish, French or English (a translation into one of these languages is compulsory).
Application payment: The application costs €44 (non-refundable). Payment must be made using the payment methods provided by the application platform. If it is not possible for the applicant to formalise payment through the means provided, they may request another option up to two days after the deadline for applications, via the email address indicated on the application receipt. Only applications for which payment has been made by the deadline will be considered valid.

Candidates for enrolment will be selected by the Scientific Council of the University of MAP-Tele, on a proposal from the director of the study cycle, taking into account the following weighted parameters:
Applications are scored from 1 (minimum) to 5 (maximum) on the three assessment criteria considered:
Merit of the candidate as measured by the curriculum vitae;
The candidate's merit as measured by the reference letters;
The candidate's merit as measured by the objectives and motivation to attend the Doctoral Programme.
Candidates are ranked according to the weighted average of their classification in the three criteria. The weighting factors are 6, 2 and 3 respectively.
An interview and/or written test may also be required as a complementary criterion.
The densifying sub-criteria and their respective weightings are set out in the minutes approved by the selection board, which are available for consultation in the notice of competition.

The MAP-tele Scientific Committee is committed to offer MAP-tele students the best academic and research conditions. Although grants within the MAP-tele Programme are not available for the 2026-2027 MAP-tele Edition, the Scientific Committee will develop all efforts to find conditions helping admitted MAP-tele Students with relevant scholarship support.
