Course Description:
This eighth-grade Pre-Algebra curriculum reinforces basic mathematical concepts and introduces skills that are essential for all students. Concepts, procedures, and vocabulary that students will need in order to be successful in upper-level algebra and geometry courses are introduced and continually practiced. The curriculum includes the following: Number Systems, Squares and Square Roots, Product of Powers Property, Power of a Power Property, Multiplication and Division Properties of Exponents, Scientific Notation, Expressions, Equations, Order of Operations, Evaluating Expressions, Solving Equations w/ Addition and Subtraction, Word Problems and Equations, Solving Two-Step Equations, Distributive Property, Simplifying Variable Expressions, Solving Multi-Step Equations, Variables on Both Sides of an Equation, Coordinate Plane, Creating Tables to Represent Equations, Graphing Linear Equations w/ Tables of Values, Slope of a Line Formula, Slope and Proportional Relationships, Graphing w/ Slope-Intercept Form, Writing Equations in Slope-Intercept Form, Scatterplots, Positive/Negative/No Correlations, Lines of Best Fit, Trend Lines, Relations and Functions, Vertical Line Test, Systems of Equations, Transformations, Reflections, Rotations, Dilations, Congruent and Similar Figures, Pythagorean Theorem, Volume - Cylinder, Cone, Sphere, Parallel Lines and Transversals, Graph Solutions, Solving One-Step Inequalities by Adding or Subtracting, Solving One-Step Inequalities by Multiplying or Dividing, Solving Multi-Step Inequalities, Computation Review: Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, Dividing Integers/Decimals/Fractions.
Course Goals: (1) To prepare students for Algebra 1. (2) For students to demonstrate comprehension and application of the above topics. (3) To cover the PA state standards and anchors for 8th grade mathematics.
Grading/Evaluation:
75% of the student’s grade will be based on test and quiz scores.
Quizzes – Units will be broken down into smaller sections and quizzes/graded assignments will be given frequently throughout each quarter to determine understanding of concepts and to prepare for chapter tests.
Tests –Tests will be given at the end of each unit. Review problems/practice tests will always be given in advance and then reviewed as a class prior to every test date. Students are encouraged to utilize the reviews and practice tests to prepare for the actual test—which will be very similar in concept and format.
25 % Homework/IXL/Class Preparation/Class Work/ Class Participation
Unfinished classwork will be assigned as homework. Reinforcement work will also be assigned if deemed appropriate for further practice on lessons when needed. More often than not, students will have time to begin homework work in class and/or during the Mountaineer Minutes at the end of the school day for individual assistance that can be provided within the school setting.
Homework will be checked and graded for completion and best effort
Each homework assignment will be assigned 2 points
It must be complete or lose the percentage that is incomplete.
It must be completed by the due date or a point per day late will be deducted
It doesn’t have to be correct, just best effort.
IXL Assignments
each section assigned is worth 2-5 points, depending on level of difficulty
must be completed by the due date or a point per day late will be deducted
Supply List:
Students will need the following for class:
1 or 1.5 inch binder
pencils! (no pens for math class)
folder for homework
charged Chromebook DAILY!!
Other Information:
*Homework assignments and upcoming test dates will be posted in the Google Classroom.
*Grades will be updated weekly on CSIU.
* If you want to see what your child is missing, check CSIU, NOT the Google Classroom. Everything appears as missing on the Google Classroom.
*Missed Work: Students should see the teacher in advance if they know they will be absent. After an absence, students should check the Google Classroom to get any missed assignments.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT:
Every child has the right to learn without disruption. If a student is disrupting the class, I have a 4 step method. Depending on the offense, steps can advance.
