If you want to check if your book has an AR test, you can log into AR or go to arbookfind.com
Please do not expect every book you find on the AR site or AR bookfinder to be in the school library or classroom. AR and AR bookfinder list every book Renaissance makes a quiz for. This means you can use books from home or the public library, books students read on EPIC, and books you have purchased from barnes and noble and amazon as well as library books for AR tests.
AR is an independent reading program, children choose to read what they are interested in and would enjoy.
Students: Bring your own book from home for AR, or choose a library book when you come in weekly. Most books are AR....ask the librarian if you want to double check your book is AR. Choose books you will enjoy and that you can read without struggling. You will do best in AR if you focus on reading what you already enjoy, and focus less on picking books based only on points.

DIS AR is done with all students 3-5. Students choose a book from the library, or home, and read. They earn points for every book they read and test on. If they read enough books they will meet their goal and be able to participate in a group reward. Goals are set by the reading teachers.

Accelerated Reader is a computerized reading program designed to motivate, manage and monitor student literature-based reading. The program focuses on each student reading books that match up with their interest and ability….books that will allow reading growth, without discouragement. The software also manages students’ records and follows student performance. AR is a classroom reading program, not reading contest or competition. The focus at the Elementary Level is not on earning points, but on meeting individualized goals set by the classroom teacher based on 30 minutes of reading a day. The reading goals are adjustable, and are used to encourage students to become active readers.

Your child will choose a book that interests them from the library or bring books in to read from home. Students test during times during the school day. Teachers monitor student progress and at the end of the marking period, students who have read consistently and who have averaged well on their tests participate in a reward event.

Your child should also be reading at home. You can help by setting aside free reading time during the week and by asking students to reflect on what they have been reading.

A common issue in AR is students get caught up in the POINTS, please help us remind students that AR is about getting credit for what they already do, picking out books and reading for fun and interest….not just for points. Your child will reach his/her AR goal as long as they are reading consistently and are reading books that match their ability and interests.

Many of the books in our Libraries are AR and are color-coded by their AR level, but students can also use books from their classrooms, the public library, or books they may have at home, as long as they fall somewhere within the student’s general reading range.

Important: When you search arbookfinder you are seeing every book the company made a test for, thousands upon thousands. Please do not expect all of these books to be in the DIS or Back Mountain Public Library. It is best to only use that site when you already have a book you want to read and just want to know if it has an AR test.

A “Just Right Book” is different for every student. You want something that will be enough of a challenge for the student, length and material wise….but not something that will frustrate them by being too hard.
