Welcome to Writers Workshop!
This course is designed to help you develop and enhance your writing skills across various forms of writing, including narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive. You will also engage in research projects and creative writing activities. Throughout the year, we will utilize online resources and platforms such as Study.com, IXL, and No Red Ink to support and reinforce your learning.
By the end of this course, you will:
Understand and effectively use the four modes of writing.
Develop research skills and write research papers.
Engage in creative writing projects.
Improve grammar, punctuation, and writing mechanics.
Utilize online resources to enhance your writing abilities.
Narrative Writing:
Telling a story or recounting events.
Focus on elements such as plot, characters, and setting.
Expository Writing:
Explaining or informing the reader about a topic.
Focus on clear and logical organization of information.
Persuasive Writing:
Convincing the reader to adopt a particular viewpoint or take action.
Focus on constructing strong arguments and supporting evidence.
Descriptive Writing:
Creating vivid imagery to describe a person, place, or thing.
Focus on using sensory details and figurative language.
You will learn how to conduct research, evaluate sources, and write research papers.
We will cover topics such as thesis statements, note-taking, citations, and avoiding plagiarism.
You will participate in various creative writing exercises, including poetry, short stories, and personal narratives.
Emphasis will be placed on creativity, originality, and self-expression.

Video lessons and quizzes to reinforce writing concepts.
You are expected to watch each video that is posted and do your best to achieve the desired score on the accompanying quiz.
Assignments and projects to apply what you have learned.
IXL:
Interactive practice for grammar, punctuation, and writing mechanics.
It is expected that YOU will do each assignment, with little to no input from classmates or the adults at home.

No Red Ink:
Grammar and writing exercises tailored to your needs.
It is expected that YOU will do each assignment, with little to no input from classmates or the adults at home.
Writing prompts and activities to practice different writing skills.
1. Participation:
Actively participate in class discussions, activities, and online assignments.
Respect the opinions and contributions of your classmates.
2. Assignments:
Complete all assignments on time and to the best of your ability.
Use online resources to support your learning and complete exercises.
3. Writing Process:
Follow the steps of the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
Seek feedback from peers and teachers to improve your writing.
4. Classroom Behavior:
Be respectful and courteous to everyone in the classroom.
Be seated and ready for the class to begin after you have completed the daily bell ringer. This means having a charged ChromeBook, having a pen/pencil, and having your binder and any necessary assignments on your desk.
Follow classroom rules and procedures.
Do not disrupt when instruction is being given, nor take away from other students’ ability to learn. This means conducting yourself properly and respectfully throughout each class period.
5. Technology Use:
Use school-provided ChromeBooks and online platforms responsibly.
Adhere to the DSD Acceptable Use Policy; do not engage in inappropriate online behavior or misuse technology.
Your grade in this course will be based on the following components:
Writing assignments and projects
Bell Ringers, class participation and class activities
Quizzes and tests
Online exercises and assignments
Research projects
