What is the grading policy?

Grades are based on the number of points earned out of the total number of possible points. Daily work, such as homework and class activities, are usually worth between 10 and 30 points. Major work such as tests and writing assignments are worth between 40 and 100 points.

Why is homework assigned?

There has always been a controversy in the United States about the benefits versus drawbacks of homework. Research shows that overburdening students with homework is counterproductive, especially in the elementary grades. In middle school and high school, however, homework assignments that meet certain criteria are beneficial in increasing achievement. In eighth grade English class, students will complete assignments that require them to practice skills and study material. Students who complete these assignments will earn higher averages simply because homework is graded, but they will also outperform peers who do not complete homework because they will have practiced and studied the material. They are more likely to retain information because they will be spending time outside of class in the material.

Is late homework accepted?

Yes, students may turn in late homework for half credit. Students are encouraged to complete homework on time, but it is better to do it late than not at all.

What is the policy for make-up work?

You are responsible for obtaining and completing assignments when you are absent. If work is due on a day you are absent, you must turn it in when you return to school. If you missed a test or a quiz, you must take the initiative to schedule the make-up within the allowed time.

Time allowed: You may have the number of days you were absent plus one to make up work. If you are absent for two days, you have three days, including your first day back to make up the work. For example, if you are out on Monday and Tuesday, you have until the end of the day on Friday to make up the work. I am flexible if there is a good reason why you need more time.

What happens if a student is unprepared for class?

When students come unprepared, they cause a disruption to themselves, the teacher, and other students because time must be taken to retrieve or replace the forgotten item. A 15 point grade (approximately equivalent to a homework assignment) is built into the total points available for each marking period. As a deterrent to coming class unprepared, students will lose five points for each failure to come to class with the required materials. Habitual failure to come to class prepared will result in a consequence or intervention appropriate for the individual student.

What should struggling students do if they need help?

Students who need help should seek the advice of the teacher before the due date. Ms. Cavill is available for help at many times throughout the day.
