In this assignment, I collected data on skittles, and then used starburst flavors to create a data visualization using the rule of thirds and emphasis with red, yellow, and pink starburst. I created 3 different prototypes based on the data I collected and used emotions to define my prototypes.
Chemvas Typography
In this project we created the word CHEMVAS with using art and science in our own unique way. Some tools I learned to complete my image were: pencil, new, export, and how to make a background transparent. With regards to the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, I think my work effectively shows emphasis, rule of thirds, dynamic composition, color, shape, texture, and pattern. For example, if you look at the letter A, you can see that the emphasis(focal point) is the yellow dot. In this assignment, I liked working with different types of tools to create a well-thought creative image. Lastly, in the future, I can use these tools to create a well-thought creative image for a business idea or for a project.
9/23/2024 - Mandala Research
They first learn how to draw it. To actually make the mandala, it takes about 5 years to train. Mandalas are used for meditation with religious beliefs. I see movement, patterns, emphasis, repetition, proportion and variety. When using a mandala, I can show an atom by using the principles of design.
Ceramics
In this assignment, my group and I (Josiah, Jack Crippen) made pottery that was based on the Columbian Exchange and our Food For Thought PBL. The pottery I made was a muffin to contribute to the Columbian Exchange because the Columbian Exchange introduced new types of food across Western Africa, the Americas, and Western Europe. The muffin also contributes to the Food For Thought PBL because we were assigned to make food or something that contributes to food, with regards to pottery.
Weaving bonds - 1/6/25
In this assignment, we worked with Ionic or Covalent bonds through art. In covalent bonds, elements share electrons and in ionic bonds, elements steal electrons. To show a covalent bond, you will share the different color backgrounds together using the slips that would connect them together. To show an ionic bond, you choose two different color backgrounds and separate them using the same colored slips without connecting the slips. This shows elements stealing electrons from each other. My partner and I made an ionic bond in the picture on the left.
chemistry of natural dyes - 1/13/25
In this assignment, we learned about how to work with natural dyes. When dying something, you need to wet it first and make sure it is water soluble. After, you place it in a bowl of water with the dye and don't leave it in too long depending on what color you want to make like lavender for example. Lastly, when you are done, take it out and wash it with ph neutral soap, so your dye won't change color.
Ink vs. Dye painting w. broken brush technique - 1/24/25
In this assignment, we learned and worked with Ink vs. Dye painting. First, I dipped the brush in water and a little in dye to get the brush ready for painting. After, I used the broken brush technique where you apply different sizes and marks of the black on the paper to reach a specified, dynamic effect. Then, I used a little water when the dye was running out, so I could input atmospheric perspective in my painting. On the left below, I created a human on a bike with a dramatic background that could help humans visualize my drawing. On the right below, I created markings that would get smaller with a variation of the color of the black dye from left to right to create a dramatic effect.
Paper-Making
In this assignment, we made paper by using paper and water. First, we filled the blender twice with water and poured it into our bin. Second, we filled the blender 2/3 and attached it to it's base. Third, we gathered paper and spread them apart instead of clumping them together, so it will be able to blend efficiently. Then, we poured the blended substance into our bin, and mixed it around to get the mixture everywhere. Next, we used a screen to gather some of the liquidy paper and put it on a towel face down. We dried the back of the screen to help remove water and then took the screen off, so the paper could stick to the towel. After, we dried the paper with the towels and peeled the paper from one of the towels. Lastly, we attached the paper we made to the paper in the picture on the left.
Augusta Savage, American Sculptor
Augusta Savage was an American Sculptor from Florida who moved to Harlem and became a Harlem Renaissance sculptor during the 1920's and 1930's. A popular sculpture she made was known as the Gamin. The Gamin below depicts a little African American boy living during the Harlem Renaissance. This art is contemporized, unique, and is distinctive. This artwork emphasizes on the Harlem Renaissance, because Augusta Savage used this little boy as a representation of the Harlem Renaissance period.
This story viewed Augusta Savage's portrayal through art and her strong desire for sculpting. She traveled to Harlem to specialize in art and traveled to Europe to learn more of the arts. I believe her interpretation of the art was to show race, equity, and symbolize the importance of the Harlem Renaissance, dignity, and the identity of African Americans. Overall, I believe this story was very fascinating and deeply portrayed Augusta Savage. I also enjoyed her artwork and liked how it effectively displayed the Harlem Renaissance and African Americans during this time.
Making Lampblack Ink
Today, my group and I made some lampblack ink and we created our own creative image with it. First, we used a metal spoon and held it over a candle to obtain soot for our ink. After, we retrieved enough soot, we used some alcohol to mix with the soot in a little container. Lastly, we each drew a creative image on the picture below. This worked because we obtained enough soot to mix with a little alcohol, so we could create the image below. The only inefficient aspect that happened during this experiment, was the wax and when the candle went out. The wax would increase and spread which was annoying, and the candle went out over time, multiple times. Overall, I enjoyed the experiment and method we did, and I would do something like this again.
For the Art portion of the Guernica, my group and I (Josiah), we drew abstractly on a board, showing emotion, to help influence the importance of gun violence around the world. We drew 2 guns, people dead around the board to show the effects of gun violence and why is a problematic cause today.
Artist Statement:
I chose Frida Kahlo because she used different techniques and styles in her artwork that were separate from usual artists. For example, Frida Kahlo drew lots of self-portraits of herself, using surrealism, cubism, and symbolism in her artwork to portray her emotions and her life. I also liked how Frida used fruits in her drawings to show light and happiness in despite of the struggle Frida was going through. Frida also portrayed beauty and resilience amongst hardships she could be going through. My artwork is related because I drew a woman hidden by darkness with an identity erase, while I drew bright fruits around her to show that there is still light and happiness inside her, even though she is being covered by her struggles. This portrays the message that there is always good when more bad can be perceived and there’s always good people have that can help overcome a struggle they are going through. An editing decisions I made while working was changing the shading on some of the fruits, so the fruits in my painting would be brighter.
