This week I began learning how to draw. I wasn't good at drawing before, so it was like starting from scratch. I began with simple drawing tutorials, then went on to learning how to draw face shapes and eyes
After practicing face shapes and eyes, I went on to the mouth and nose, then put everything together. I made a complete face along with hair.
I was swamped with work from my other classes, so I didn't really draw as much. I learned how to draw basic bodies with faces and I also improved on how I draw male faces. Im a bit behind because I still cant successfully draw a body and I have yet to draw backgrounds. I plan to catch up over the break and come back with a nicely drawn background. I also want to buy better colored pencils instead of the childish ones I have with me.
Over thanksgiving break I discoverd that it takes longer to learn how to draw bodies and body parts. So I decided to perfect a method that would ensure a even body,
This week I got into drawing clothes. Its not on my calendar but its important for me to learn this. I got advice from my friend Amira who draws and she told me to use a ruler to make things more even.
This week I began drawing backgrounds. The second picture was me drawing a bedroom using perspective points. The first picture is me free drawing a background. I decided to draw it two different ways to work out which way was best for me. I decided to use perspective points when a character is inside and free draw when they're outside.
The image on the left is a before image of how I used to draw before starting this project. The image on the right is my progress so far. Now I realize that Im no Pablo Picasso, but I see a huge improvement.
I think my pacing was something I did well. Even though I fell behind sometimes, I learned what was necessary during each week. I also think I improved my art during the first semester. The feedback I received was mostly positive . The statement that stood out to me the most was that someone liked how I researched and then practiced. With that, I will continue to use the same method that I used to learn how to draw, when I learn how to animate. I'm going to watch a couple of videos then practice and put everything together. If available, I plan to enter my animation into a contest. If there isn't one, then I want to make a youtube tutorial on animating for beginners. The changes I made on my calendar weren't big. During week 15 instead of presenting my final project, I planned to use critiques I got during week 14 and inserting them into my film. During weeks 16 and 17 I planned to make a slideshow of my progress over the past school year, starting from the very beginning. Week 18 would be reserved for the feedback I'd get from my individual presentation with Ms. White. Finally, Week 19 would be me showing my finalized slideshow presentation and animation to the class.
This week, I focused on solidifying my art style. I still haven't perfected it but by next week, I should be good. I recently got my Ipad fixed and I decided to use that as my main tool for my animation. I researched many apps that could help me with an animation and came across procreate. I decided to buy the app procreate and the pictures on the left are products from that app. Next week, I want to begin learning how to animate on procreate.
This week, I played with the animation feature on procreate. I also wrote a description for each scene in my animation. I want to make a short animation about teenage depression and how school contributes to it. I wanted to talk about a topic that is ignored in our society.
This week I began drawing out my storyboard for my animation. I want my animation to lose color as it goes on, hence the lack of color from panel one to five.
I finished my storyboard and wrote about my next 5 scenes. This story board has less color because as my story goes on, I want the color to fade as a symbol of sadness and depression
Today I started on animating my story. This is meant to be a shot of her waking up and the unfinished part is a preview of the next clip I'm animating. During this process I discovered how time consuming animating is.
I continued animating my story, still on my first scene. I animated my main character walking to her bathroom, however, it looks off.
This week, I fixed her walk, so it looks a little less choppy. I still think its off but it still looks good. I also began animating my next scene, and after this Ill be done with my first scene.
During this review I got some very useful feedback. My peers told me that they liked that they could see how much my drawing improved. One person liked how passionate I sounded about my project along with my animations. They mainly liked my presentation and the examples of my work progress so far. The suggestions I received were to pick up the pace with my animation, which I need to do. They also told me to focus more on drawing whole bodies and perfecting it. Some more feedback I received was research other animation projects for ideas
This week I began attempting to finish my first scene. When animating, I noticed that something looked off. This week I didnt really get any work done due to frustration. I'm not good at drawing hands or side view angles, so I practiced drawing them over and over. It didnt look right to me, so I keep starting over.
This week I finished my first scene and began sketching out my second scene. I notice that i'm moving kind of slow, so next check in I'm going to try and have most of scene 2 completed.
This week, I finished my second scene. I tried to make it longer, but discovered that I ran out of space to continue my animation. Nect week, Im starting a brand new animation slot.
As I said last week, I ran out of space to continue my animation. To prevent this from happenings again( and to add on to parts of my animation) I downloaded an app purely for animation. The app is called FlipaClip and works like Procreate. I dont have work from this week, because I ran out of ideas for my next scene. Over the break I plan to clean up my animation and do at least 2 scenes.
This week I began the animation for my third scene. I am not on schedule, however next week I plan to finish Scenes 3-8. This will leave me to do 9 and 10 during week 15 and weeks 16-19 can be used for touch ups.
I finished scenes 4,5 and began on 6. Scene 3 isnt done yet because i dont know how to execute it. Next week I plan on doing 7,8, 9, and 10 and then using the rest of the weeks to tweak it and add any music.
Next week I plan to finish 9 and 10, then work on revisions
This week I drew my outline for 9 and 10. I was studying for my AP exam, so I didnt finish it but I plan to finish those scenes and add in extra to lengthen my animation
Next week I hope to clean up my animation and make it longer. This is a screenshot from one of the scenes.
This is my final Animation. My animation is about how school can sometimes negatively affect a student. During this process I learned a lot of things. I realized how tedious the animation process is and how little an outcome you recieve. It felt like hours of animating my short but I only ended up with 11 seconds. I also learned about how repetitive it is. Some feedback that I received included focusing on the bodies, which I tried my best to do so. It might not have come out the way I wanted it to but I'm proud of myself for making it 11 seconds despite not knowing how to draw and or how to animate. I cut out some scenes because it didn't look right to me but I like how it came out overall.
