The purpose of this project was to create a step-by-step flowchart that guides students in determining the most appropriate method for differentiating a given function. The flowchart follows the logic of a programming diagram and uses standard flowchart symbols, including ovals for start and end points, diamonds for decisions, rectangles for processes, and parallelograms for input and output.
The chart walks students through the process of finding derivatives by asking simple yes-or-no questions to help them choose the correct rule. It incorporates key differentiation techniques such as the power rule, chain rule, product rule, quotient rule, and implicit differentiation, and it reminds students to rewrite functions when necessary before beginning.
As part of the project, I created specific flowcharts for functions requiring the product rule and the quotient rule. The project also includes worked examples that demonstrate how real problems move through the flowchart, helping students understand both how and why each rule is applied.
