During my freshman, sophomore, and junior year I was the robotics club president. During sophomore year, our team worked on a robot for the BETA convention. The prompt for convention was Sort, Move, Stack. Our team came up with a design mimicking a baggage claim area at an airport. We assembled a predesigned robot and made prop suitcases out of wooden blocks to go along with the mock conveyor belt made out of foam.
We placed 4th place in the state convention for this project, qualifying us for the national convention!
During my junior year, I decided to create a robotics team. Unlike the pre-existing robotics club, the team met after school and worked towards weekly competitions. We were team #26663 in the First Tech Challenge.
This year was interesting as we had a diverse team with a diverse set of interests. In addition to robot construction, our team was involved in outreach activities. We spread the foundations of STEM in the community by hosting pop ups during the Drew Lantern Parade and the East Atlanta Village Strut.
Our team learned a lot about troubleshooting, documentation, and robot construction during this year. The nature of the Saturday competitions showed us how important it is to adapt and be prepared given the likely chance of a malfunction.
Being the captain of a robotics team also taught me a lot of self advocacy. It fell upon me to seek sponsorships/money for parts and promote the team to recruit members. This was an extremely rewarding experience that has deeply inspired me to continue to pursue engineering. It has also largely contributed to my leadership ability today.
GTRI is a research organization within Georgia Tech. As a high school intern, I had the opportunity to work with a team on a project during the summer before my senior year.
Our task was to design a runners baton that repels dogs. Each team member's job was to design a PCB. Those PCBs were printed, stacked, and put inside our runner's baton prototype.
The internship was great exposure to the engineering field. I got to work with a driven and unique team. I also put my presentation skills to the test at the final presentation ending the internship.
This internship also refined my skills in CAD and my soldering skills!
