Greetings, my name is Kellsey Yarbrough, and I am a senior at Charles R. Drew Charter School. I possess a diverse range of interests and pastimes, including but not limited to gaming, indulging in anime and manga, engaging in swimming and painting, and socializing with my friends. In addition, I find enjoyment in taking selfies, honing my baking skills, embarking on experimental endeavors, and embracing novel experiences.
Who is Kellsey Nia? First, what does Nia mean? It means “Purpose”. This is what I strive to do, live purposefully. In doing that, I strategically set goals regarding how impactful I am. I feel the best words to describe me are resilient, ambitious, optimistic, determined, and harmonious. Some of my many goals in life are to go to college for my major in art and to be successful after college. “Never be limited by other people’s limited imaginations.” - Mae C. Jamison. That is a quote that inspires me to imagine beyond my dreams.
I am an active member of various clubs and organizations that I’ve enjoyed participating in over the years. To name a few, they are Beta Club (2016-2020), Book Club (2017-2020), Breakthrough College Prep (2016-Present), Girl Scouts (2012-2017), and Cedine Bible Camp (2016-Present). Along with the clubs and organizations, I’ve received many awards and recognitions. Principal’s List and Honor Roll (2012-Present), Good Citizenship Award (2019), and 1st Place APS Middle School Math Competition (2020).
My volunteering experience has been fun and exciting, as well as educational. Volunteering at SWEEAC (Southwest Ecumenical Emergency Assistance Center) while in Book Club. was a rewarding experience to prepare and serve the homeless and people in need. Some of my responsibilities in the SWEEAC Wearhouse were to organize large amounts of grocery bags, canned goods, and other boxed foods for prep in an assembly line fashion. Although I did not have the opportunity to meet the recipients, knowing that someone would not go to sleep hungry, gave me a sense of fulfillment.
An act of volunteering that I have had the opportunity of participating in was Reading Across America, through my school. Reading Across America is an organization that selects students through our Book Club. Upon acceptance, they were asked to meet with the Elementary Academy to read books and interact with the Pre-K – 2nd Graders. Another volunteer activity that I have participated in, was being a Student Teacher Assistant. After school, I would walk down to the Elementary Academy to assist a teacher with filing papers, organizing, and lesson plans.
What is most exciting to me is creating Art displays. Some of my hobbies are swimming, bike riding, reading, baking, playing my cello, and drawing anime. I have been working with my cello for 6 years and I have been in Orchestra for 7 years. Some of my favorite activities are traveling. I have had the exciting opportunity to travel to the Northeastern part of the United States, the Dominican Republic, Western Caribbean territories, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. I would like to continue to explore the world to share my creativity in Visual and Culinary Arts.
I have been interested in Healthcare since a young age. It started through my mom. She’s in the healthcare system as an MRI Tech. She always took care of my dad, brother, and me whenever we were sick. That inspired me to not only exemplify her by taking care of other people as she did but furthering in Healthcare ever since I’ve had a knack and fascination for the Human Body. To be more precise, I've held a special affection for the heart, above all other organs, bones, or systems in the human body.
In addition to pursuing a major in healthcare, my second major area of study will be Visual Arts. I was always a creative child when I was younger and loved to experiment with paint, colors, and materials. I always used to create mini paper artworks for teacher appreciation occasionally with painted rainbows in Elementary School. This passion for Art grew quickly as my parents fed into my interest by supplying me with more art supplies and canvases. Soon I took a class in 10th grade that gave me more options to explore other areas of art and ways to express it. With these new methods, I took it further at home and made multiple art pieces with them.
