The food that I got was a chicken burrito. The picture is of a spinach quesadilla. The main ingredient in my burrito that I loved was the Spanish rice. The rice was super flavorful and it had a bit of a kick to it. The rice originated in Mexico. It is a traditionally Mexican dish as it is made from indigenous Mexican spices. the combination of the tomatoes and chilies as well as the spices give it the powerful flavor. It was introduced to Spain around the 16th century, hence the name Spanish rice. The guacamole another traditionally Mexican dish, made mainly of aguacate is a dish loved across a lot of the Hispanic world. The last thing was salsa. Salsa is traditionally eaten with hand mad tortilla chips and some sort of course salt. The salsa can be used in a wide variety of dishes as well It packs a powerful flavor and heat. Food can connect people around the world by creating an outlet for people to share their identity as well as the ways that people tell their story. I know for me coming from a family of Hispanic decent there are so many times where the food being prepared comes with a story. The empanadas, arroz con pollo, horchata, Dulce de Leche, and so many more foods come with this sense of connection to the family that came before.
Lugo and Muller used many similarities in the construction of their vases. They include similar ideas pertaining to a historic figure as the head of the vase, as well as using historic images or images that are recognized in their cultures. I think that Lugo created the piece the way that he did to highlight the African-American culture, and really bring light to the things that we as community have done. Lugo includes many forms of symbolism in his work. When reading about him he states that he included sprinkles in some of his works to highlight the health issues like obesity that a lot face in the community, as well as colors, words, and patterns to communicate the issues of social injustices. The piece that inspired me the most was a lot of the sculpture pieces. The way all of the artist were able to sculp the fabric on the body draped as if it was actual fabric, moving in the wind was incredible to me. The emotion in the face of the muse, the detail in the movement of the body, the sheer detail of the eyes, and fingers. All of it creates this feeling like you want to know the story. If I were to recreate one of those pieces, I would use things that are significant to my background. Being that I was adopted, I would include a memory or piece of my biological family in the sculpture.
Food, art, and , geometry can connect to this PBL because they can all be used to represent culture. A lot of what we saw on our field trip was tied back to culture. The geometry can tie in with art because you can use geometric design in a lot of the pottery that is seen at the High. Roberto Lugo's hip-hop pot has geometric shapes in it for example.
