A still life is a painting of inanimate objects, usually flowers, fruits, and glass vases. The artist takes a scene and recreates it on paper.
I was presented with a mannequin, a skull, and roses on top of a bedsheet for this project. As an added challenge, the still life was done using charcoal and white pencils. This project deepened my understanding of value, scale, and proportion.
This is another still life I've done this year.
First, I set up my still life. I used styrofoam shape blocks. I chose a cube and a pentagon. Afterward, I sketched my image on a white 9"x 7" canvas in pencil. Once I got my sketch reviewed by my peers, I went to work. The shades I used were made by me, using only titanium white and black oil paint. I used mineral spirits to spread the paint when it got too thick.
This art piece represents a window into my personal world.
The left side was a glimpse into my school life: a creative, hard-working student at Drew Charter. I used orange paper as a background to stimulate a warm, nostalgic feeling as I look back at my past.
The right side is who I dreamt of becoming. I wanted to be a film director, someone with accolades, successful, and beautiful, with a nice string of pearls to match. My dream employers are Netflix and Sony.
For the middle section, I took inspiration from Henry Selick's Coraline. The scraps of purple and blue tissue paper were crumpled to resemble the passageway Coraline takes to the other world.
Coined by the Californian art critic Jules Langsner, hard-edge painting is an approach to abstract painting. It was quite popular in the 60s. Bright, flat colors with sharp, geometric edges characterize this style of abstract art.
"Why do you think personal appearances are considered more effective than advertisements in the game? Do you believe this is similar to real life? Why?"
I think personal appearances are considered more effective than advertisements because they feel genuine. Receiving a handmade birthday letter is considered better than a birthday text. Anyone can shoot a text, but it takes time and effort to make a specialized card. It's heartfelt, and people appreciate sincere acts. When candidates take the time and effort to campaign in a state, residents feel that the candidate is genuinely interested in their voices and opinions.
In this project, we studied the nine types of leukocytes and their function, characteristics, and importance in our immune system.
Leukocytes are white blood cells. Despite making up less than 1% of our blood, they are integral to our well-being. Leukocytes fall into two categories: granular and agranular.
The granular cells are the neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils. The neutrophils kill bacteria, the basophils are responsible for inflammatory responses, and the eosinophils kill parasites.
The agranular cells are the monocytes and lymphocytes. These include dendritic cells, macrophages, T-cells, B-cells, and Natural Killer (NK) cells. Monocytes clean up damaged cells, lymphocytes help fight infections and create antibodies, dendritic cells show antigens on its surface, macrophages eat foreign invaders, T-cells send signals to control the immune response, B-cells create antibodies, and Natural Killer cells destroy pathogens.
