Engineering Semester 2

Brief

Project Intro

This picture shows me materials I can use to make and put into my desktop organizer

Design Brief

This image tells me what I will be doing throughout this project.

Design Constraint

This image tells me the rules I must follow throughout this project.

Research

Craftmanship: 2" x 2" Cube Exercise

I made the cube with a cereal box made of cardboard. Also, I had to measure all of my cut-out pieces with a tap measure.

Research for organizers

This design is unique because of its shape and what it is made of. I can see that the person who made this put a lot of work into the desktop organizer. The element is form and the principle of design is pattern.

Research for organizers

This design is quite unusual and very unique, its shape is a circle at the bottom, but the changes when going to the top. I feel that the element is shape and the principle of design would be movement because it seems to be able to spin around.

Research for organizers

This design might not be as unique as the others, but the organizer in this image looks like a small dresser. Also in my opinion the element of this design would be space and the principle of design would be unity.

Idea and Brainstorming

Designing with Elements and Principles of Design

This is just the assignment where we were to draw whatever came to mind. I used shape for my element and variety for my principle of design.

First draft Idea (drawing)

This is my first draft of what I was going to make. So I drew this as best as I could, and I got this idea kinda randomly, I did look at images of desktop organizers, but I thought of this on my own. I used shape and proportion for this drawing.

Final Drawing (3D drawing)

This is the final drawing of my model that I made. In this drawing, I have all my measurements. I also made sure that I had enough compartments so I numbered all of them. I then used the element, shape and the principle of design was proportion. This design was mostly made up in my head, but I did see some designs that helped me make up my design.

Final Drawing (Front, side, or top view)

This is the top view of my final drawing, as you can see all of my compartments are there. My element and principle of design are still shape and proportion. I picked the top side view because honestly to me it was easier.

Prototyping

First draft Model (View 1)

First draft Model (View 2)

Picture with all items in place

This is my first draft model, I used materials such as scissors, a tape measure, paper because I didn't have cardboard at the time, and other materials. The element I used in this project was called shape and the principle of design was called proportion.

I will make sure for my final prototype to add more to my project also, I will use cardboard and I am going to add more compartments. I will then have a ruler so my measurements will be more accurate. Then I will make sure everything looks better in general and make my secret compartment more of a secret.

Final Model (View 2)

Final Model (View 3)

This is the final model I used materials such as scissors, cardboard, tape, a ruler, and other materials. The element I used was shape and the principle of design was proportion. I got this idea in my head really, but I did look at a few pictures to come up with the idea.

I used my feedback from my first draft model to make my final model better. I added more compartments, I used cardboard this time, I also made it look better, and I made a better secret compartment.

Testing

Final Model Image with items

The items in my model helped me significantly, I need the ruler to measure and draw out my pieces. The glue helped keep some pieces together also the tape kept most of the pieces together. I used the scissors to cut out all the pieces and the pencil to draw out the pieces. Some items were heavier than others so I had to make sure my model could support the weight and everything else is just for show.

Evaluation

For this project, I used the design brief and design constraints to help me follow the steps and make sure I was doing everything correctly. The research for my final model definitely helped me with this project. The research organizers were most effective to build up my idea even though I mostly had the idea before looking at desktop organizers this really helped. The Idea and Brainstorming were crucial for this project those steps helped build and learn from my mistakes so when I made my final model everything would be in place. Testing made sure that everything was working the way it was supposed. Also, this step helped me make sure all of my compartments kept their items in place.

My element and principle of design are shape and proportion. I chose this shape because I saw a few pictures that had the shapes that I have in my design, so those designs inspired me to do this model. Some of the feedback I used was, I didn't use cardboard on my first draft model and I didn't have a ruler to measure everything, so I had to measure my first draft model with other things. Now I used cardboard and I had more materials to use so that I could make my final design better. The most challenging in this project was trying to keep everything together and making sure nothing falls apart which many pieces did. Something interesting is that this model didn't take that long to complete.
