During the 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement evolved as activists sought new strategies to combat racial injustice in the United States. Stokely Carmichael, a prominent leader in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), played a crucial role in shifting the movement toward a more radical stance with his promotion of "Black Power" in 1966. This call for self-determination, racial pride, and political autonomy challenged the more integrationist approach of earlier civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. The Great Speckled Bird, an underground newspaper, supported and spread these revolutionary ideas, giving voice to grassroots activism and dissenting views. SNCC's endorsement of Black Power marked a pivotal turn in the movement, emphasizing Black leadership and control over their communities, and reflecting growing frustration with slow progress and systemic racism.
