We Are Queens Overview

We Are Queens is a Durham Public Schools (DPSNC) district initiative, that empowers girls of color throughout the district to become allies, advocates, agents of change, and co-conspirators in changing the environment around them, including their schools. This program supports girls of color by providing the following:

Academic enrichment
Healthy identity development
Civic and social justice engagement
Leadership training and development
Cultural affirmation

Membership and participation in all Durham Public Schools student clubs and organizations are open to all students without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or other protected classifications.

History

The We Are Queens program began at Rogers-Herr Middle School (RHMS) in 2021 with a small group of about 10 girls. Over time, the program has experienced significant growth, attracting more than 50 girls to its interest meetings. The We Are Queens program at RHMS has had several influential keynote speakers, such as the former Mayor of Durham, Elaine O'Neal, former Miss North Carolina 2022, Karolyn Martin, and Miss Black North Carolina 2024, Ricki Nelson. Additionally, the We Are Queens program at RHMS presented the first Miss RHMS pageant awarded scholarships and prizes to contestants. The We Are Queens program at RHMS not only fosters a sense of community and empowerment among participants but also encourages them to develop leadership skills and confidence that will serve them well in their schools, communities, and beyond.

Program outcomes

Provide female students of color with a variety of enrichment opportunities based on their interests and needs.
Provide a safe place for female students of color of varying backgrounds to engage in activities that are developmentally and academically appropriate, culturally affirming, and relevant to their interests and goals.
Increase the number of relationships that are established between area schools and community organizations/ partners.
Decrease in the number of disciplinary infractions received by students who are participating in the program.
Increase the number of partnerships between schools/district and area colleges and universities, and community organizations.
