Hand Reveal Line Drawing Activity

Grades 3-5

Watch this video to learn how to make a cool hand drawing, using line. Materials needed: paper, pencil, marker. Trace the outline of your hand or someone else's hand on the paper, lightly with pencil. Moving from one edge of the paper to the other, draw parallel lines across the page with marker. When you hit the traced hand line, curve the line, as if it is going over the hand. When you get to the edge of the hand, then straighten the line again. Repeat, curving as you go over the fingers. You can color between the lines when you are finished, or leave as is.

Tracing Shapes

Using cut shapes of cardboard or found objects, trace around the shapes. Used a variety of large and small objects.

Do shapes overlap?

Think about the whole page as you go.

How can you change the line thickness?

Can some lines go from thick to thin?

What do the spaces between (negative space) look like?

Color some areas with crayon, pencil or marker, or use different shades of grey or texture. Choose 4-5 colors you like.

How does your eye move around the space?

What does it remind you of? Title your work at the bottom and sign it!

1. Outline objects

2. Go over lines to make thick or thin, dark or light

3. Add color to parts of shapes and lines

Lower El or Upper El - More Portraits , ala Picasso - Abstract

Materials needed: 2 sheets copy paper, pencils/markers, tape or glue, magazine ads. or newspaper

Draw simple portrait. If you have glue and magazine ads, collage onto some parts.

Then cut your face up into 6 or 8 sections., with no one section smaller than 4 x 4 inches.

Re- arrange the pieces so you still see the face, but things are angled or crooked.

Glue or tape on to a new sheet of paper. Add more color or lines or patterns as you want/need.

Sign it!

Alternative:

Build portrait with found objects, or collage papers, and never glue it--- just make, photograph the image and re- arrange, or put stuff away!

Build a Building

Make a building with squares, rectangles and triangles from recycled paper and cardboard.

With a parent, find scraps of magazines, old mail, boxes from food, cans, lids, etc.

To make a three dimensional tower:

Stack up all the things you can find! Measure it? How high can you go?

To make a two-dimensional building:

Using flat shapes, cut cardboard and paper into large shapes.

Organize to make buildings with doors, windows, roofs, chimneys, etc.

Glue or not. Take a photo to save., Do it again!

Crayon Resist Color Print

Materials needed: 2 sheets copy paper, sheet of aluminum foil the same size as paper, regular markers, crayons, small brush.

1. Make a simple line drawing with the crayon. Press hard. Do not color in areas, keep it line only.

2. Color in solid areas of the foil with different colors of marker.

3. Gently brush over the marker with water to make “paint”.

4. Press the drawing on top of the wet marker.

5. Remove, let dry!

6. Wipe off the wet foil, to use again. Make new drawings to repeat the process.

Easy Mother's day Card

Hand and Heart

Mom’s day Hand Heart Card

Materials needed: Two pieces of paper, different from each other, scissors, tape or glue, dark marker or crayon.

Fold paper in half, making crease. Make sure it is bigger than your hand when folded.

With thumb and pointer(index) finger touching crease, trace around your hand.

Cut out your hand, following the lines, making sure NOT to cut off the crease at your fingertips.

Unfold!

You will find a heart shape in the middle.

Glue or tape to another paper.

Add a message such as I love you, You’re the best Mom, or another saying.

Sign you name and hide until Mother’s day, Sunday,May 10th!

Starry Night Silhouette

Look at the painting Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh.

What do you see? What do you wonder? What story or place in time is the artist telling you about with his work?

Think about how he made the color swirl as if the wind is blowing the colors across the sky, and the light radiates out from the moon and stars.

The trees up close are deep colored and shadow like, and the buildings of the city below are dark.

Draw some stars and a large moon with crayon towards the top half of the page.

Using crayon (or oil pastels if you have them) make your swirly sky. Take 2 or three crayons of similar color, i.e. light blue, dark blue, blue violet, in your hand and make some big wavy lines across the page. You can even make some half spirals. Make the color thick and bold!

Layer and layer the color., switch to another group of colors, maybe yellows and oranges to circle the stars and moon.

You can try to add purples, or whites on top to deepen or lighten some areas.

When you are finished with the sky, and have covered most of the white area,

find another sheet of paper that is dark, or color a whole sheet dark grey, black or brownish.

Draw an outline of a tree, or a city scape and cut it out.

Tape or glue your silhouette over your crayon sky., lining up the bottom of your cutout with the bottom edge of the paper.

Voila’!

Mirror Image Drawing Challenge

Materials needed: copy paper, pencil or marker

1. Fold your paper in half, long ways and make a crease.

2. Starting on the top edge of the folded crease, draw lines, and/or

3. Shapes, and/or

4. A single line that wiggles and curves as it goes from the top edge of the fold to the bottom.

5. Unfold the paper. You will have lines on one side.

6. With marker or pencil, try to follow the designs on the left with a mirror image of your lines on the right.

7. Extension: If you draw a single line top to bottom, you could cut out your shape, or you could color in parts of your design. Experiment! This can be as simple or as hard as you choose.

Nature Collages

Focusing on Elements and Principles of Art(All Grades)

Create a collage out of natural materials using one of the specific elements/principles of art. I can collect a variety of natural objects. I can organize my natural objects to create... (K-1) Variety (2-3) Color (4-5) Unity (6-7) a specific type of balance (8) Emphasis

Materials:

Bag

Scissors

Camera, phone, computer(to take a photo of finished work)

Remember to focus on...

(K-1) variety. Try to find many different natural materials.(size, shape, color, texture)

(2-3) color. Try to find as many different colors as you can in nature. (If you can't find all the colors in the

rainbow focus on finding different values of that color.

(4-5) unity. Try to find a variety of natural materials but collect more then one of the same material. This will

help you create unity.

(6-7) balance. Choose which type of balance you want to use(radial, symmetrical, or asymmetrical). Keep this

in mind when you are collecting your materials.

(8) emphasis. Try to find objects to create a strong focal point. Try to find a variety of different objects and

possibly very bright colored items to help create your focal point.

4. Find a place to create. I would recommend creating outside on a flat surface.

5. Create your design focusing on the art element or principle assigned.

6. Take a photo of your artwork
