"Academically or intellectually gifted (AIG) students perform or show the potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experiences or environment. Academically or intellectually gifted students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas, specific academic fields, or in both the intellectual areas and specific academic fields. Academically or intellectually gifted students require differentiated educational services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program. Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor." - State Definition of AIG Students, Article 9B (N.C.G.S. § 115C-150.5)

At George Watts Elementary, students are served through whole groups lessons in Ms. deBlaquiere's room (K-2) called Investigations, small group pull-out groups (K-2), and cluster groups (3-5). Typically, students in kindergarten through 2nd grade participate in higher level lessons that include critical and creative thinking tied to the core curriculum. Third through fifth graders who are identified receive services with an AIG licensed teacher or specialist. Students who show mastery of core standards may also be nurtured in the small groups or in the clustered classrooms.

Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade - INVESTIGATIONS! Critical Thinking lessons with each classroom five weeks per quarter with pull out groups for the most advanced learners with the K-2 AIG teacher.

3rd, 4th and 5th Grades - Clustered classrooms with certified AIG teachers or pull out with Ms. Krocke.

Nominations

DPS Criteria is used to identify students for the AIG program.

• Any student, parent, teacher and/or staff member can nominate a student to be considered for the AIG program.​*

• All nominations are directed to the AIG Facilitator, Felisha deBlaquiere. Contact can be made via email-felisha_deblaquiere@dpsnc.net, telephone-919.560.3947, or a written note addressed to Felisha deBlaquiere.

• Nomination for the AIG program does not ensure testing and/or identification.

​Data Gathering

Once parental permission is received, the AIG Facilitator will begin to gather data including, but not limited to, the following items:

• Achievement test scores

• Aptitude test scores

• Most recent report card

• Work samples

• Survey data from teachers and/or parents

Determinations

What happens once data is collected?

• George Watt's AIG committee meets to review data and determine identification/service options. A student can be Intellectually Gifted (IG), Academically Gifted (AG), Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) or Does Not Qualify for Services.

What are the differences?

• IG = 97th percentile on a nationally-normed aptitude assessment

• AG = 89th percentile or above on nationally-normed achievement and EOG >85th percentile

• AIG = >89th percentile on 2 of the 3 following criteria​: Nationally-normed achievement, Aptitude assessment, EOG >85th percentile

• Does not qualify = the criteria is not met

Once the students is identified for services, what happens?

• Based on the data gathered, the AIG Committee will match a service option to the student's needs, and a Differentiated Education Plan (DEP) will be developed. The parents will be invited to a conference in which the DEP will be reviewed and then the parent signs. Parents will meet at the beginning of each school year to review and sign a new DEP.

New Students

Students transferring within the DPS system will retain their identification. Students new to the DPS system who wish to be considered for identification need the following:

• Any AIG identification from previous school

• Achievement/Aptitude scores

• Most recent report card

Determinaciones

¿Qué sucede una vez que se recopilan los datos?

• El comité AIG de George Watts se reúne para revisar los datos y determinar las opciones de identificación / servicio. Un estudiante puede ser dotado intelectualmente (IG), dotado académicamente (AG), dotado académica e intelectualmente (AIG) o no califica para los servicios.

¿Cuáles son las diferencias?

• IG = percentil 97 en una evaluación de aptitud normalizada a nivel nacional

• AG = percentil 89 o superior en logros normados a nivel nacional y EOG> percentil 85

Una vez que los estudiantes son identificados para los servicios, ¿qué sucede?

• Requires licensure – oversees the implementation of the district AIG Plan in the school and meets with school leadership.

• Teaches weekly lessons in kindergarten through second grade that develop critical thinking skills.

• Delivers instruction and services to students in 3rd - 5th grades identified as gifted and students who are candidates for nurturing.

• Coordinates screening and identification.

• Maintains records related to gifted education procedures.

• Collaborates with other specialists and teachers at the school to differentiate learning for gifted learners.

• Communicates with teachers, counselors, and administrators about the needs of gifted students.

• Facilitates the school's AIG Committee which meets monthly and the AIG Partnership Committee (for parents) which meets quarterly.

• Communicates regularly with parents about events concerning AIG students.
