Here is a list of my top ten advocacy strategies that you can use to help support the gifted learner in your life! Please note these are not ranked in any specific order and are mere recommendations.
1. Educate yourself: Stay informed about gifted education policies, research, and best practices. Familiarize yourself with the needs and characteristics of gifted learners to better advocate for their specific requirements.
2. Build relationships: Cultivate positive relationships with teachers, administrators, and other school personnel. Establish open lines of communication.
3. Communicate openly: regularly communicate your child’s strengths, challenges, and learning needs. Share insight, and observations with school personnel.
4. Understand the legal landscape: Familiarize yourself with local, state, and national laws and policies regarding gifted education. Advocate for stronger legislation or policy changes.
5. Request assessment: if you suspect your child may be gifted, request formal assessment from the school to determine eligibility for gifted programs or accommodations.
6. Attend school board meetings: Engage with your local school board and attend meetings to express your support for gifted education.
7. Form supportive communities: connect with other parents of gifted learners in your community.
8. Collaborate with gifted associations: Join local or national associations for gifted education associations.
9. Formulate a plan: Work with the school to develop a differentiated education plan..
