STEM Class

Welcome back!

Our first rotation focused on the rules for STEM class.  Then I shared some STEM activities I did over the summer break.

K=used different blocks to build

1-2=listened to If I Built a School & designed own school

3-5=Refresher course on Book Creator

K-1=listened to Not that Pet! and drew any pet they'd like to have; then designed a house for the pet

2-5=Cup towers...used 50 cups to build tallest tower. (Stay tuned for results!)

K-5=Boosterthon huddles took place at the beginning of each class, so we had a shorter time.  With any time that was left, we got moving and grooving with Flocabulary or GoNoodle, or we had some time with online STEM - using Kodable or Arcademics.

K=Listened to the story Boxitects, then drew what they would build with boxes

1=Cup towers-used 50 cups to build the tallest tower

2-5=Cup towers part 2- had access to more materials (cardboard sheets, craft sticks, other cups) to make the tallest tower

K=Worked with pattern block pictures

1=Got on Kodable

2-5=Kodable or Arcademics

*Some classes made up missed lessons/activities

K=Did an experiment about corrugated cardboard

1=Went outside & looked for clues about how we know it's Fall

2=Discussed biodiversity; looked at various animal live cams

3=Went outside to look for signs of life (nibbled leaves, paw prints, etc.)

4=Went outside to look for evidence of erosion

5=Did an experiment about hurricanes

K & 1=Roll-A-Monster drawing game

2=Learning/Relearning Book Creator

3=Leaf Sculpture (may need to redo/catch up for some classes due to weather)

4=Dancing Ghosts/Bats - figure out a way to make a tissue bat/ghost dance with a balloon (static electricity)

5=Weave a Web - create a realistic web that holds several toy spiders; Extracting Strawberry DNA - we had Duke STEM students come and do this experiment with us!!

K & 1=Listen to the story Turkey Trouble; disguise a turkey 

2-5=Building a turkey hideout that conceals a "turkey"; different materials are used with each group

K-5=This rotation was used as time to catch up.  Several classes had missed a lesson or two, so we did them now.  If a class didn't need to catch up, they got on Kodable, Arcademics, or Book Creator.

This rotation was all about holiday/winter activities!

K=We did an experiment using a balloon to make tinsel move.

1=We did an experiment to see which liquids cookies dissolved in most.

2=We did an experiment to see which liquids candy canes dissolved in most.

3= We made slime.

4=We made tree or snowflake tessellations.

5=We made straw tree or snowflake decorations.

K-5=All classes shared how they used STEM over the break!  K-1 did it on paper while 2-5 made a book in Book Creator.

K=Built with various blocks

1=Listened to Do Not Lick This Book & did experiment about germs using pepper, water, and soap

2=Made a paper helicopter & tried it with 2 different paperclips

3-5=Typing lessons

K=Experimented with what happens when 2 cars collide

1-5=Due to the ice, we weren't able to finish the last rotation, so these grades either caught up on germs, paper helicopters, or typing.  If a class got the lesson, we had some time with online STEM.
