The AVID Elective
AVID @ BROGDEN MIDDLE
AVID @ BROGDEN MIDDLE
The AVID curriculum, based on rigorous standards, was developed by middle and senior high school teachers in collaboration with college professors. It is driven by the Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR) method, and inquiry based questions will be taught through by Costa’s Levels of Thinking by Dr. Arthur Costa.
AVID curriculum is used in AVID elective classes, in content-area classes in AVID schools, and even in schools where the AVID elective is not offered.
AVID as a program centers around the idea of “limitless opportunities” and strives to provide students the tools and skills necessary to be successful in whatever their post-secondary plans take them.
Students that have chosen and accepted their nomination will have the following:
AVID students meet with Mrs. McClary 2x a week (Monday, Wednesday*, & Friday).
It is a year long course.
The students will learn organizational and study skills,.
Work on critical thinking and asking probing questions (Costa’s Levels of Thinking).
Get academic help from peers and high school/college tutors.
Participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable.
Their self-images improve, their self-images improve, and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.
This is what a typical middle school AVID elective schedule looks like.
