A newsletter at an elementary school is a regular update from the teacher or school to keep parents informed about what’s happening in the classroom. It includes important information like upcoming events, what students are learning, and reminders. For first-grade parents, it helps you stay connected with your child's education and know how to support their learning at home.

We will continue learning about Early American Civilizations until the last day of school in December. This domain includes a study of the Maya, Aztec, and Inca civilizations. Students will examine the fundamental features of the Maya, Aztec, and Inca, including farming, the establishment of cities and government, as well as religion. Students will be encouraged to compare and contrast each of these societies and their elements. Specifically, students will learn about the ancient Mayan city of Baakal and about the Mayan king, Pakal II. Students will also learn about Moctezuma, the Aztec ruler, and about the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. For the Inca, students will hear about the city of Machu Picchu and the role Inca runners played in Incan society. Last, students will learn that much of what we know about the Maya, the Aztec, and the Inca today is due to the work of archaeologists.
Until December 10th, we will continue working in Unit 3, where students are learning about the concept of a ten (10 ones) and how to use it to add and subtract within 20. They’ll practice breaking apart numbers to make adding and subtracting easier and will continue building fluency with facts within 10.
After finishing Unit 3, we will begin Unit 4, where students learn how two-digit numbers are made of tens and ones. For example, 42 means 4 tens and 2 ones.
Students will practice:
Building numbers using connecting cubes (tens and ones)
Drawing tens and ones
Counting by tens and then “counting on” with ones
Comparing numbers using the symbols < and >
These activities help students understand how numbers are built so they can move from simple counting to a stronger number sense. This foundation will support them as they solve more complex math problems in second grade.
Thank you for supporting your child’s math learning!
In the month of December we will be working on how to work on our emotions. We will be focusing on reviewing listening skills, how to talk to ourselves in a kind way and managing our emotions in our “safe place” or “rincón seguro” in the classroom.
The students are learning the lyrics of our morning songs called “Las vocales"
We encourage you to practice at home!
