Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (BESS)

The BASC-3 BESS is an evidence-based, universal screening tool that Denver Public Schools utilizes to proactively identify and respond to the social-emotional needs of students. It is not an assessment or evaluation. North High School is committed to ensuring that each of our students has strong access to Whole Child Supports. This screener helps us accomplish this goal utilizing a comprehensive, data-driven approach. All NHS students will complete the BESS unless their parent or guardian opts them out. Please contact your students school counselor or  mental health provider.

Per district guidance, North High School will be administering the BESS two to three times throughout the year. Screening will occur during the Fall and Spring semester, and may include a winter screening. Repeated screening helps us determine if the supports we provide to students are effective in meeting their needs. Check back here next school year to learn when the screening dates will be.

BESS OPT-OUT INFORMATION

You also have the option to EXEMPT your child from participating in the self-report screener. If you DO NOT want your child to participate in social and emotional screening this school year, please look for communication in community newsletters.

If we do not receive an OPT-OUT form from you prior to screening, we will assume you are choosing to have your child participate in social and emotional screening.
