Universal Screening Testing
Each Fall, The Gifted and Talented department of Denver Public Schools conducts universal screener testing. Every student in kindergarten, second grade and sixth grade will be tested. Currently, the kindergarten and sixth grade students take the NNAT assessment and second grade students take the NGAT assessment. Both assessments are non-verbal tests and assess for reasoning and problem solving.

Nominations for Gifted and Talented testing or Magnet School Testing.
Students in the1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th grades, that were not tested in the previous 3 years, can be nominated for testing. This testing takes place in the fall, but there is often a spring testing cycle too. The next nomination window will open on July 1st for Fall of 2025 testing.
Other testing that can be done most of the school year:
The Torrance Test of Creative Thinking can be conducted for qualifying students. This assessment measures a person's creative thinking abilities in four main areas: fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration
IOWA Tests are achievement tests by content area. Students who show strength in a content may be eligible for testing in their academic area(s) of strength. For most grades this would include reading writing, math, science and social studies. A qualifying score on these tests could be used as part of a body of evidence for Gifted and Talented identification, but it would not qualify a student for a gifted magnet school.
