HSC Immersions

In conjunction with Catholic Mission, the College runs an annual Immersion which aims to give students in Year 11 an understanding and appreciation of cultures different to their own with opportunities for faith formation. This experience is spiritually enriching for our students and staff that attend.

WHAT HAPPENS ON IMMERSION? 

A small group of students immerse themselves in the day-to-day life of local communities in an Australian Indigenous context or an overseas country between 9-11 days. Whilst students spend time 'being with' the local people in their daily routines, the educational program also encourages critical questioning and reflection. This allows students to return home with a greater cultural awareness, a broader vision of the mission of Jesus and a new perspective, inspired to live out a personal sense of social justice. Past Holy Spirit College students have travelled to places such as Alice Springs, Borneo, Cambodia, Mongolia and Philippines.

HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT TO OTHER TRAVEL EXPERIENCES? 

A Catholic Mission Immersion is designed to provide students the experience of immersing themselves in a local community and culture, to gain an understanding and appreciation of cultures different from their own, viewed from a faith perspective. The experience is designed to ‘be with’ others, listening and learning. We do not visit in order to help or ‘do for’ others. The experience is NOT designed around service work in the community. The actual day-to-day itinerary is developed in partnership with the hosting community. Catholic Mission commits to not over-burden local people with our stay.
