My artwork is based on the scripture passage Journey to Bethlehem. While Mary was still pregnant, she and Joseph went to Bethlehem to register. I chose this passage because it represents the hard and difficult journey we all have to face in life sometimes.
I used acrylic paint for the texture. The sky is full of different shades of blue and purple, showing darker and lighter tones. For the grass, I used black but mostly dark blue for the shading and corners. There was also a bit of yellow in the grass to make it look brighter. The bits of grass sticking out are made with pencil strokes and the road is sprinkled with real sand for more effect. Bethlehem is covered in black with a little bit of yellow peeking out. This is the light from the city. It is black with barely any detail. This makes it look small and hard to see, as if it’s still far away. The donkey is also black as I tried to make it look like a silhouette. The entire artwork is made with dark colours to show that Joseph and Mary may have journeyed through the night.
This artwork connects to me, because it shows that there is still a long way to go, that my goals are still far away. But Mary and Joseph eventually reach Bethlehem, meaning I’ll eventually reach my goals too.
