Student Reflection
I wanted to represent a young mother making a decision. Making such a life changing decision like having a baby is challenging especially since the baby is Jesus. I connected this story to my own life as Mary has similar universal emotions as my mother and mothers of the world when the prospect of pregnancy is on the horizon.
My artwork is a pencil drawing. I utilised shading techniques such as cross hatching and variation of shades throughout the artwork to achieve depth and detail. The bold shading of the coloured pencils were chosen as they complemented the lead pencil.
In this scene, the Annunciation has occurred. The Angel Gabriel, the herald, is gazing into Mary’s eyes, hovering within the humble room. Mary is astonished and is hesitant to answer the question, deeply contemplating the circumstances. There are clouds on top of the room with baby Jesus captured in slumber, resting upon the clouds of heaven. One of the Magi is observing the scene with attentiveness. I chose to add the Magi as a symbol of Jesus’ royalty in heaven and on earth. Above the room is a splash of vibrant colours representing the separation between the divinity of heaven and earth.
