Student Reflection
My artwork is based on Matthew 2:13-15, The Flight to Egypt. I titled it “Guardian of the Light” because Joseph listened to the angel in his dream and courageously fled to Egypt to protect Mary and the baby Jesus. In this moment, Joseph became the guardian of God’s light in the world. This passage reminds me that, like Joseph, I can trust in God to guide and protect me during times of fear or uncertainty.
I created my artwork by first sketching the scene and then using Posca pens to bring it to life. I was inspired by comic book art and the work of Roy Lichtenstein, whose use of bold, flat colours and distinctive dot patterns influenced my design. The dotted skies show the passing of time as Joseph and Mary travelled day and night to escape danger. I depicted Mary with an expression of worry and fear, imagining how terrified she must have felt in her situation.
Through this artwork, I aimed to blend modern art techniques with a powerful biblical story, showing that faith and trust in God can guide us through even the most uncertain journeys.
