Student Reflection
I chose Matthew 2:13-13 because it reminds me that even in times of fear and uncertainty, God is always guiding us. Like the Holy Family, I’ve had moments where I had to leave what felt safe, such as when I flew to Japan. I was nervous and afraid, but I felt God giving me the courage to face something new, just as He did for Joseph.
Joseph wears green to symbolise growth, showing how he had to quickly grow in faith and trust when the angel spoke to him. I crocheted blue and white flowers to represent Mary’s purity and calm strength as she protected Jesus. I added a crown of thorns on Joseph’s head to show how he carried the future sorrow of Jesus’ suffering. The olive branch comes from Bethlehem, reminding us of Jesus’ birthplace and the peace He brings. The golden background symbolises the angel’s presence and God’s light guiding their journey.
I drew inspiration from Australian artist Jai Vasicek, whose use of expressive facial features influenced the way I portrayed Joseph; with emotion, depth, and a strong sense of inner strength - even in the hardest moments.
