Student Reflection
‘Silent Light, Sacred Night’ is inspired by the passage, Matthew 2:9-12, ‘The Visit of the Magi’. It captures the reverence of the Magi’s journey beneath the divine glow of the Bethlehem star. The Magi walk in humble admiration through a desert landscape, guided by the light above, carrying gifts for the newborn King. Their journey represents faith, devotion, and the courage to follow God’s call, even across long and uncertain paths.
The figures are painted in black acrylic, creating strong silhouettes that stand out against the soft, expansive sky. Watercolour washes form a glowing night, blending deep blues and purples, fading into the horizon, while the star shines with bright, guiding light. This contrast between dark and luminous elements creates depth, drawing the viewer to the sacred moment.
The combination of media - acrylic for the silhouettes and watercolour for the sky - adds both texture and a sense of ethereal light. Through this work, I sought to convey not only the physical journey of the Magi but also the spiritual significance of following God’s guidance. The piece celebrates faith, awe, and the quiet wonder of this holy night.
