Student Reflection
My artwork was inspired by Matthew (1:18-25), ‘The Birth of Jesus’. I chose to create a mosaic after being deeply moved by the stunning mosaic floor of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. In my piece, I sketched Mary cradling the infant Jesus and outlined the drawing with beads, symbolising the rough and challenging journey Mary and Joseph endured before His birth. To add vibrancy, I used colourful tiles against a black background, creating contrast and depth. At the top, I placed a star made of tiles, representing the Star of David that guided the Three Wise Men.
This representation was shaped by my visit to the Sistine Chapel. The moment I entered and saw the beauty of its mosaic floor, I felt a powerful sense of inspiration and connection to the Holy Spirit, which guided my creative process.
