Student Reflection
My piece is a visual response to the Annunciation, the moment described in Luke 1:30 when the Angel Gabriel visits the Virgin Mary. While I was inspired by Fra Angelico's famous masterpiece, 'The Annunciation', I chose a different path. Instead of intricate detail, I used graphic shapes and earthy hues to simplify the message and create a sense of grounded simplicity.
A central focus of my artwork is the Angel Gabriel’s wings. I aimed to depict them as a symbol of power yet elegance. Their large size and strong form represent the immense power and divine authority of God’s messenger. However, their graceful curves also convey the soft, peaceful, and beautiful nature of the news Gabriel brought to Mary.
My artwork portrays Mary as she is described in the scriptures: a young and simple girl. She was just a regular teenager, not rich or powerful, which reminds me that God can choose anyone for sacred tasks.
As a 12-year-old, I'm especially drawn to Mary’s humility. Her story shows me that God doesn't care about our age or status; He looks for a humble and open heart. Mary’s "yes" to God's plan, even when it was scary, teaches me that trusting in God is more important than having all the answers. Her courage inspires me to be a servant of God every day.
