Student Reflection
My artwork is a re-imagining of the Annunciation, a moment from Luke 1:26-36. Instead of showing Mary in full acceptance, I’ve captured her uncertainty and hesitation as she hears Gabriel’s message. She is depicted shying away, reflecting her initial fear of the immense responsibility of raising the Son of God. This emotional response is very relatable, as we all face moments where we want to shy away from life's big challenges.
The lilies surrounding Mary are a key symbol. Traditionally representing purity, here they also signify hope, assuring that she will find strength on her journey. This message is particularly meaningful in 2025, the Jubilee Year of Hope. The lilies also connect to my personal life; my best friend, Lilly, has always been a source of kindness and hope when I've faced my own challenges. Her unwavering support mirrors the hope that will guide Mary.
I used gouache paint to create this piece. The strong pigments show Mary's intense emotions, but by watering them down, I achieved a softer, more tranquil effect. This technique visually represents her mixed feelings—her powerful fear balanced by the sacred calm of the moment.
