Student Reflection
My artwork is inspired by the reading from the Gospel of Matthew 1:18-25, ‘The Birth of Christ’. The words “she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit,” reminds me that Mary was chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus, which was a huge responsibility. I created my artwork using coloured pencils and copper leaves. I used the copper leaves around Mary’s head because it frames her crown and brings attention to it. This is important because it symbolises a halo, showing she has a pure, kind heart. I drew many flowers around Mary because they can symbolise new life and I used bright colours to show hope and joy. The technique I have used is shading because it shows texture. I used lighter shades around the border and brighter shades closest to Mary. My personal connection to the Christmas story is that when my mum gave birth to my brother and sister, she was given a lot of flowers to celebrate.
