Convocation is a concert for Grade 5 in December and for Grade 4 in May. All students in Grades 4 and 5 participate in the musical magic!
“Convocation” means “coming together.” It's a perfect description for this program, as we come together as a community to make and share music. Much appreciation to Josh Southard (music educator and Orff clinician) for inspiring us to create these events!
In Convocation we sing, but that's not all! Students also play in ensembles of drums, ukuleles, xylophones, mixed percussion... you name it! This type of musical experience grows naturally out of our Chickering General Music curriculum and repertoire.
We give context to our Convocation musical repertoire with a work of children't literature. In 2024-25, we are performing Return by Aaron Becker (Grade 5) and Change Sings by Amanda Gorman (Grade 4). This is an interdisciplinary experience, with connections and projects taught across content areas, including Art class with Mrs. Uminski, Library class with Ms. Ring, and Spanish class with Senorita Sawan!
