Workaholism is commonly referred to as "Hustle Culture" and "Grind Culture". Hustle culture is connected to the concept of having a "side hustle" or additional employment outside of a person's full-time job.
Workaholism is also referred to as "burnout culture" with individuals leading a lifestyle that results in feelings of burnout or exhaustion.
As many names that it falls under, all of these terms refer back to the common mentality: if you work hard enough, you'll become successful.
When you scroll through social media sites like Instagram, think of the times you might have scrolled past a motivational quote or a hashtag encouraging you to put in the work to achieve your dreams. Seems like a genuine sentiment, right?
It's only when you look closer that these motivational quotes or posts under these hashtags that they start to pose an unsustainable precedent of how hard people should be working.
Take for instance the hashtag #millionairemindset, which currently has almost 9.3 million posts on Instagram. The concept of the millionaire mindset is to change or take a hold of your life, with the mindset of doing anything to accomplish your goals and dreams. Yet some of the posts tagged under #millionairemindset suggest that "grinding" or putting work before anything else will lead to success and thus personal fulfillment.
