Hi!
My name is Debs Escobar (She/They). I am currently a grad student at the University of San Francisco (Class of 2022) and a 7th-grade teacher. I have been out at school since I was 11 years old. I hardly remember a time in my life when I was not out. I wish my teachers spoke about the LGBTQ+ community that I am so proud to be a part of. I didn't think I fit into the world and didn't see anyone like me (a queer person who worked with youth) until I was in high school. Even now, as an LGBTQ+ educator, talking about the LGBTQ+ community is seen as taboo. I still sometimes hesitate to talk about my girlfriend as freely as my straight counterparts talk about theirs. As an adult, I've had to unravel the homophobia I held towards myself, which I mostly learned at school. The purpose of this site is so people can break that heteronormative culture that is harmful to everyone. This disruption must happen in order to make school as an institution, the place it needs to be.
