This unit will prepare and guide students to analyse and research their chosen performance pieces for their Junior Practical in the form of a programme note.
This unit can be delivered at the assigned time allocation in the school for the completion of the CBA. It incorporates aspects of the three music strands of Procedural Knowledge, Innovate and Ideate and Culture and Context. This CBA affords students the opportunity to take on the role as a 'musicologist' and develop their critical thinking skills in analysing their interpretation of their chosen pieces of music.
Throughout the Junior Cycle music course, students are afforded the opportunity to research the background knowledge of a wide variety of music from different music styles. For example, students may write a programme note on their favourite Christmas song, a Romantic orchestral piece around Valentines Day or an Irish tune around St. Patrick's Day. By doing so, students are engaging in independent learning and at all times are given the choice of presenting their research in a variety of formats. Students are therefore equipped with good IT skills and working knowledge of google slides, doc, Soundtrap and other similar platforms. This unit has also been designed so that students with limited prior knowledge can develop such knowledge and skills throughout the three weeks.
Procedural Knowledge: Innovate and Ideate: Culture and Context:
1.5, 1.10, 1.11, 1.12, 1.13, 1.14 2.4, 2.5, 2.8, 2.9, 2.10 3.2, 3.3, 3.6, 3.7, 3.9

Explore keywords and explain the historical context of a piece of music
Demonstrate the skills needed to design, plan and write a programme note
Present their programme note using a chosen format
Develop their research skills
