Ready to Study Abroad - 1989
My mother came to the United States in 1961 as an exchange student from Italy with the American Field Service.
I began my journey toward Global citizenship when I spent my junior year abroad in Padova, Italy in 1989.
Early in my career I was lucky enough to travel around the world when I worked for AT&T. I spent a whole year living in Mexico City where I worked to support the global sales and international business development teams. It was the experience of a lifetime. Other places I visited for business include: India, China, Argentina, Brazil, the UK and Venezuela.
Now I travel with my family, trying to share with my children, my passion for learning about other cultures and languages.
Pamplona, Spain - 2012
We spent a week meeting with groups on both sides of the US-Mexico border learning about immigration policy, human rights, education, healthcare, social justice, economic and political issues. We spent time in direct service and also listening to various ideas to gain perspectives on the global inter-connectivity of our two nations.
Alternative Spring Break is offered by Campus Ministry, and it gives students the opportunity to spend a week learning about social justice issues. La Bamba takes students to San Diego and Tijuana to learn about immigration and border issues. We had the opportunity to work with populations on both sides of the border and to learn about what it means to be displaced.
As with most of my experiences at Dominican, I learned more from the students than they did from me!
Thailand was an assault on the senses, but everything in a good way! We learned so much about Thai culture, people, gastronomy, industry, traditions and religion. From eating deep fried crickets on the streets of Bannock, to volunteering in an elephant sanctuary, to a 48 hours silent Buddhist retreat, to visiting ancient temples - every experience was unique and a definite first.
